Significance of Sri Krishna Janmashtami

The eighth day of Krishna Paksha in the Bhadrapada month is observed as Janmashtami, the birthday of Lord Krishna. It is believed that Lord Krishna was the eighth child of Mata Devki.

As per Hindu mythology, Kansa, the ruling king of Mathura, got his sister Devaki married to Yadu king Vasudeva. However, Kansa's evil deeds continued and he once received a message from heaven that his sinful deeds would end with Devaki's eighth child. Although Kansa killed six children of Vasudev and Devaki, the seventh and eighth survived due to divine interventions.
